Awase Doshi Kai

Year Started: 1926, with about 15 member families.
Organizers: Yuzo Tasato, Koshin Shikiya.
Original officers: Shokichi Ishihara, president; Koshin Shikiya, treasurer; Ryoki Nakama, secretary.
Notes: Notes by Frank Teruya: (1) Until at least the 1920s Awase was renowned as the salt producing center of Okinawa. Besides salt production, many small industries were located in the area: lumber milling, blacksmithing, and manufacturing of tubs used as containers for sugar. Awase was supplied lumber and firewood by the Yambaru area, the region that included Kin-son and Haneji-son. These items were shipped to Awase on sailboats called "Yambaru bune" (ships from Yambaru). (2) Many of the early immigrants from Awase went to Kauai, mostly to Kekaha and its vicinity. (3) In 1974, the Awase Doshikai celebrated its 50th anniversary and honored families of original club members.
