Past presidents: Kohan Iha (1930-41), Kenneth Taira (1948-50), Kenichi Iha (1950-52), Kenji Yamashiro (1952-54), James Yamashiro (1954-56), George Yogi (1956-58), Robert Henna (1958-60), Herbert Ishikawa (1960-62), Dr. Bill Nakagawa (1962-64), Rodney Yamashiro (1967-69), Tommy Uechi (1969-70), Kenji Yamashiro (1970-79). Present membership: 40 families. In j1979 members 90 years or older were: Mr. And Mrs. Matsu Yamashiro (both 90), Kana Iha (90), Shinsuke Taira (90), and Mrs. Kosei Nakandakari (93).
Notes: Notes by Seiko Yamashiro and Kenji Yamashiro: (1) Shortly before the United States entered World War II, the club sent money to families in Ishikawa, Okinawa, who had lost their sons in the China Incident of the 1930s. After World War II, the club participated in community-wide war relief programs to aid Okinawa. In addition, the club independently sent money to the municipal office and the schools in Ishikawa. (2) The first among Ishikawa immigrants and descendants in Hawaii to enter the professional fields are: Dr. Matsuju Yamashiro, a physician who was a major figure in the postwar relief programs of sending medical supplies and hogs to Okinawa; Dr. Yoshio Yamashiro, a veterinarian who served in Hawaii, Guam, Southeast Asia and Okinawa; Senator Robert S. Taira, presently chief negotiator, Hawaii State Office of Collective Bargaining, who served as state legislator for 16 years; Dr. George Yamashiro, professor with a doctorate in Hebrew; David Ishikawa, attorney, presently state commissioner of Motor Vehicle Insurance; Dr. Ken Yamashiro, a dentist practicing in Hilo, and Stephen K. Yamashiro, Hawaii County Council chairman (1976-80).
